SHARM - Easy to use sound recorder and editor
Review by on
Advanced audio editing software may not be so easy to use, but they can still come in handy for some people. If you are a hypnotherapist, psychotherapist or you work in other therapy related fields and you don't have time for every patient, recorded sessions are a good solution. Creating such a recording can be quite easy with SHARM. It has the features of an advanced audio editor, organized in a way that makes it easy to create complex recordings.

The software may take some time to download. The package is 29 Mb large, which could be a little difficult to handle by slower Internet connections. Fortunately, the fast installation process will make up for lost time. A standard wizard will guide you through a few simple steps which require setting an installation path and shortcuts.

The main area of the interface features multiple audio channels. Adding a sound to a channel is done by clicking and dragging over one of them, which will make a colored bar appear. In order to add the sound itself, you need to select that bar and click the add button from a tabbed options panel, placed on the right side of the window. You can also add different effects to a sound by accessing the option panel's tabs.

All audio channels are labeled as "voice", "ambient music", "nature", "bells" and so on. Moreover, their lengths are divided according to certain stages of the therapy. By default they include start, relaxation and certain stages of hypnosis. If these do not correspond to how you conduct your therapy, you can customize them. The tools button will drop a menu where you can access the stage editing feature. It is a simple list where you can add or delete entries. The order in which you add the stages in this list will be the same on the main interface. All these will make it easier for a therapist to know what channels to use and when.

SHARM also features voice and live recording. You can either record yourself in order to add your instructions to the therapy session, or you can record your live sessions with a client. These functions are launched separately via toolbar buttons and you will find slightly different options when ending a recording. After you stop a live recording, you can save it to a certain folder, burn it to an audio CD and more. When stopping a voice recording, the options you will encounter include adding the recording directly to a new or a selected audio channel.

Pros:
SHARM is not as advanced as other similar software, but the way the interface is designed makes it ideal for people who need such a tool. Experience is not a requirement if you plan on using it.

Cons:
The trial version lets you do mostly anything, except exporting your project.

Therapists are not necessarily experienced with computer use. By making use of SHARM's user friendly interface, they will be able to create complex recordings without any problems.
